Pamukkale Hierapolis Ancient City
During the excavations in 2016, evidence was found that the settlement in the region dates back to the Iron Age.
During the Phrygian period, there was a religious center dedicated to the main goddess of Anatolia, Cybele.
Although information about the founding of the city is limited, it is known that it was founded at the beginning of the 2nd century BC during the reign of King Eumenes II of the Kingdom of Pergamon. The name Hierapolis is derived from the queen of the Amazons, Hiera, the wife of Telephos, the legendary founder of Pergamon.
In 395 AD, Hierapolis came under Byzantine rule and became the center of a bishopric. By the end of the 12th century, Hierapolis remained within the borders of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum.
